Five tips for buying second hand home goods

Summertime is a great season for second hand shopping!  In Texas, if you go early before the heat hits, it can be a lot of fun and very fruitful!  Where to begin…

Make a list –
1. White dishes
2. Silver pieces
3. Chairs
4. Storage
5. Frames/ artwork
6. Dressers

I am always open to other things, but these are the basics.

Be Flexible –
If I do fall in LOVE with something I can usually find a good place for it even if it’s not my “style”. I don’t worry about whether it goes and I can look past its current state because I know I can refresh it in some way.  These shelves have been several different colors have lived in several different places.  Wire baskets are one of my favorite things to find because they can be used inside, outside, for parties, etc.

Have a home in mind –
This kinda contradicts what I just said, but I try not to buy without knowing its future home. If I do and I don’t LOVE it, it usually ends up in a pile in my garage.

Sometimes I think I can share it with someone else, but be careful with this. The “value” that you see in that piece may be harder for someone else to visualize. I can usually find a very specific things for my family but otherwise I don’t risk it.  My boys went through a marble collecting phase.  This glass jar holds them and keeps them easily accessible.

Negotiate –
It never hurts to ask, all they can say is no!  Especially when items are popular to collect like this camera.  My mom found this and got a great deal on it just because she asked.

Shop frequently –
You will not be able to go to a yard sale or resale shop once and find everything on your list. This is why it’s good to have a list because then you can stay focused on what you actually need.  The chairs in our kitchen were collected over a six month period.  Everywhere I went I was on a mission for chairs.

Do you like buying second hand?  What are you looking for?  Have fun!
